When Ming-Na first heard that her character on Stargate Universe was to come out of the closet as a lesbian, she reveals that she was shocked and wasn’t too prepared for the change.
However, when the show’s producers asked her if she was ready for the portrayal, she accepted, on the condition that a deep, well-rounded, and above all, a ‘real person’, would be shown, instead of another gay stereotype.
It turned out to be one of the best decisions of her career, as she gained immense recognition and acclaim for the role.
She says that it was a great challenge for her as an actor, but she drew inspiration from the real-life roadblocks that she had to face, being an Asian in the industry.
She reveals that she could very well relate to the character of Camille, the one that she portrays on the show.
However, that does not mean that she is homosexual in reality, instead, she could empathize with how difficult it was for her to be different from the people around her.
Even more challenging than portraying a lesbian woman, was portraying a lesbian woman, who is in an authoritative position, and has men working under her.
Camille’s character is an IOA officer, who is the head of the human resources department.

What Ming-Na loves best about the character that she portrays, is that she is very real-to-life, and goes about her homosexuality in a very subtle and respectful manner.
But that does not mean that she is all-serious about the portrayal and cannot take it with a pinch of salt. This becomes evident as she laughs, saying that girls’ lips are very soft.
She quickly adds her question about whether that is the wrong thing to say!
She is so cute!
Well, right or wrong, what we know for sure is that we totally love this girl, and cannot wait to see more of her!
Right?

From her interviews, before the show got the green signal for season 2, it seemed as if she has been treating the drama just like her own biological child.
